In 1946 there where 3.4 million babies born, 20 percent more then in the previous year. This number increased in the following years; 3.8 million of babies were born in 1947, 3.9 million in 1952 and then more then 4 million babies were born every year from 1954 - 1964. by the time the boom tapered off "baby boomers" made up 40 percent of the nation in the USA. In 2011 in the UK over 800,000 baby boomers turned 65, presenting a challenge for the British government as the majority of them will begin claiming state pension.
Some historians argue that the reason for the baby boom was due to a desire for normalcy after 16 years of depression and war. Whereas others think it was a Cold War campaign to fight communism by outnumbering communists. However, it is more likely that the baby boom occurred due to older couples who had postponed marriage and childbirth during world war II as well as young adults who were eager to start families after it.
Baby boomers had access to increased educational, financial and social opportunities meaning they are often portrayed as the generation of optimism, exploration and achievement. This is backed up by the fact that more young adults pursued higher education in comparison to previous generations.
